The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) is pleased to announce that Kraig S. Vandewalle, DDS, MS, MAGD, ABGD, of San Antonio, received the organization’s Dr. Thaddeus V. Weclew Award during AGD 2015, the academy’s annual meeting, which took place June 18 to 21 in San Francisco.

Named for the AGD’s founding father, the Dr. Thaddeus V. Weclew Award is presented to a dedicated educator who embodies the spirit of comprehensive dental care. Recipients are professional role models whose activities exemplify a commitment to the profession of dentistry and the principles of the AGD.

“We are proud to honor Dr. Vandewalle for his efforts toward advancing the field of dentistry through education,” says AGD Immediate Past President W. Carter Brown, DMD, FAGD. “His dedication to his country and career has set him apart as a leader in the dental world, and he serves as an exemplary role model to his peers.”

A 1984 dental graduate of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Dr. Vandewalle is currently a professor at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences Postgraduate Dental College in Bethesda, Md., and is the director of dental research of the two-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD-2) residency program at the Air Force Postgraduate Dental School at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas.

Dr. Vandewalle has served as president of the Air Force component of Region 17, the armed forces constituent of the AGD, as well as president of the American Board of General Dentistry. He has authored or co-authored more than 150 scientific articles and abstracts, and lectured on dental materials to numerous military and civilian dental groups. Dr. Vandewalle was the winner of the prestigious Association of Military Surgeons of the United States Dentist Award as the federal service dentist of the year for 2012 and was selected as the 2014 Outstanding Senior Educator at Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center.

Dr. Vandewalle recently retired from the U.S. Air Force after 30 years of service.
