Kraig S. Vandewalle, DDS, MS, MAGD, ABGDKraig S. Vandewalle, DDS, MS, MAGD, ABGD, Receives AGD’s Dr. Thaddeus V. Weclew Award. The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) is pleased to announce that Kraig S. Vandewalle, DDS, MS, MAGD, ABGD, of San Antonio, received the organization’s Dr. Thaddeus V. Weclew Award during AGD 2015, the academy’s annual meeting, which took place June 18 to 21 in San Francisco. Named for the AGD’s founding father, the Dr. Thaddeus V. Weclew Award is presented to a dedicated educator who embodies the spirit of comprehensive dental care. Ivy S. Schwartz, D.D.S., M.S.Ed.Ivy S. Schwartz, D.D.S., M.S.Ed., Distinguished Teaching Professor, Department of Comprehensive Dentistry has been selected as one of eight distinguished members of the faculty at the Health Science Center to receive the Regents Outstanding Teaching Award from the UT System (more...). The Award is the foremost teaching honor in the System, and recognizes excellence of the highest degree. Dr. Schwartz has been a faculty member since 1984 and has been instrumental in curriculum innovation and management, school governance and coaching and mentoring initiatives. Dr. Schwartz still writes many letters of recommendation annually for students she had years ago as they seek to advance in their careers, a testament to the role she played at the beginning of their careers.

Deborah Ann Driffill, RDHDeborah Ann Driffill, RDH, is the newest Board Member of the Alumni Association. Debbie has been a dental hygienist for 37 years, 18 of them with Dr. Shults. She was a member of the first graduating class at UTHSCSA School of Dental Hygiene, and she also has a B.S. in Health Professions Education from Southwest Texas. She loves spending time with her 5 grandchildren and her basset hound Katie. Along with embroidering and sewing when she has time, Debbie loves to support her 2 sons, both high school football coaches, by going to as many games as possible!

Lt Col (Dr.) William Baez, USAF, Dental CorpsLt Col (Dr.) William Baez, USAF, Dental Corps, was promoted on May 9th, 2014, to the rank of Colonel on MacDill AFB, Tampa, Florida. Major General Robert Catalanotti, Director of Exercises and Training, US Central Command, a friend to the Baez family, presided over the promotion ceremony and administered the oath of office. Dr. Risé MartinDr Rise Martin has been named the 2012 Texas Dentist of the Year. Dr. Martin is a 1985 graduate of the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio and now maintains her practice in Lakehills, Texas. She is a member of the Texas Academy of General Dentistry, the American Dental Association and the San Antonio District Dental Society. She has been inducted into the Pierre Fauchard Academy, the International College of Dentistry and the American College of Dentists Fellowship.

Dr. Shane RicciDr. Shane Ricci has been named the 2012 New Texas Dentist of the Year. Dr. Ricci is a 2006 graduate of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and now practices in Plano, Texas. He is a member of the Texas Academy of General Dentistry, the Texas Dental Association and the 2011 recipient of the Texas Academy of General Dentistry’s Leadership Award. He is also the President of the Dallas Academy of General Dentistry and founding member of TAGD’s New Dentist Committee.

Dr. Jim TyreeDr. Jim Tyree, of Austin, has been nominated by the Central Texas Academy of General Dentistry for the Texas Academy of General Dentistry’s (TAGD) Dentist of the Year Award. It is considered the most prestigious honor a Texas dentist can earn. Dr. Tyree is one of only 15 dentists nominated for this year’s award. He and the other nominees will be honored at a special gala on Friday, September 14, during TAGD’s annual Lone Star Dental Conference in Austin. Each nominee will be recognized and will receive an engraved plaque. The gala will conclude with the announcement of the 2012 Texas Dentist of the Year and the presentation of the trophy to the winner.

Gayle Glenn, DDS, MSDGayle Glenn, DDS, MSD, Class of 1982, has been elected the 2012-13 president-elect of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), the oldest and largest dental specialty organization in the world. The election was held during the AAO's 112th Annual Session in Honolulu. Dr Glenn will become the American Association of Orthodontists first female president in May 2013.

Ernesto Trevino, DDSErnesto G. Treviño, DDS, Class of 2006, from McAllen recently won the Texas Dental Association’s (TDA) New Dentist Leadership award. Presented annually, the award is given to an Association member who has demonstrated extraordinary levels of leadership, professional growth, ethical conduct, community and professional volunteerism, and continuing education while less than 10 years out of dental school. Dr. Treviño was nominated for the award by the Rio Grande Valley District Dental Society and chosen out of a field of four candidates by his peers within the Association.
